In a person with scoliosis, forward bending of the trunk will cause a protuberance to appear on their back, at the level of
the scoliotic curve: this anomaly is commonly referred to as a hump. For people with scoliosis,
this hump is an aesthetic problem, as they fear that it is obvious to everyone else. But that is not the case at all.
There is often a world of difference between the problem itself and how it appears in everyday life...

In each number of our newsletter, we present the experiences on how scoliosis is treated worldwide through an
interview with one of our Online Master course participants. They are fellow doctors, physiotherapists, and orthopaedic technicians coming from all over the
world.
This month's interview, is with dr. Carmen Urago, Physical therapist from the
Netherlands.
"There is no screening at school anymore... Therefore, scoliosis is often overseen, and in some severe cases, the
intervention is recommended immediately by a scoliosis specialist who is most often a surgeon orthopaedic at the time of diagnosis. This puts a lot of stress
on families...".

Will a scoliosis curve of around 30° get worse
or give me back pain during pregnancy?
It is hard to predict the evolution of scoliosis. In adults, we
normally talk of surgical scoliosis, associated with an increased risk of worsening, pain and disability, when the curve exceeds 45°-50°. In the
presence of a curve measuring less than 30°, on the other hand, the situation can be considered stable. And the further below that 30° threshold we are, the more
stable it will be.
Don't forget, though, that scoliosis is about more than just the severity of the curve. In fact, when examining a patient, a specialist will measure
many parameters ...

The experts' brace-classification: a newly published study with
video-commentary
Studies have shown that brace treatment for AIS is effective but not all braces are the same. The classification of
scoliosis braces developed by SOSORT with SRS, ISPO, and POSNA and approved by ESPRM, a study just published by The European Spine
Journal, aims to produce a classification of the brace types.
Prof. Stefano Negrini, Scientific Director of Isico and first author of the article, highlights in the
video-commentary of the study that: "This is the first edition of a brace classification that we expect to change with better understanding and more research in
the future..

My kid is always slouching:
bad posture or a medical problem?
In today's digital age, the incredible
exponential curves of technological growth and innovation are increasingly reflected in curves of another kind, namely those affecting our spines, as we assume
various odd and unnatural positions when using our electronic devices.
Parents are the first to notice their youngsters' tendency to adopt these awkward and unattractive positions. The most
frequent is the hunched back position, where the upper spine, shoulders and head are bent forward in relation to the rest of the body.

Skiing, playing a musical instrument, dancing or even jumping in the air - is it possible when wearing a brace? Yes,
it is; the hundreds of patients who participated during the past 10 years in our Concorsetto, the national ISICO competition
dedicated to brace wearers, proved it.
The videos and images of these kids are the best encouragement for those who are preparing to follow a demanding therapy such as that for scoliosis, and who are
living the fear of not being able to practice a sport or play an instrument. So here's the idea for a monthly appointment on our
Youtube channel: follow us and find out what you can do when wearing a brace!
