Returning to physical activity after surgery
for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis
|
|
|
|
In some cases, patients who undergo corrective surgery for scoliosis may reduce their level of physical activity
postoperatively, due to a loss of spinal flexibility and pain. This inevitably impacts negatively on their
quality of life.
No guidelines have yet been published on the resumption of physical activity after surgery...

In each number of our newsletter, we present the experiences on how scoliosis is treated worldwide through an
interview with one of our Online Master course participants. They are fellow doctors, physiotherapists, and orthopaedic technicians coming from all over the
world.
This month's interview, is with dr. Jian-Yu Chen, CPO from Taiwan.
"Right now, in Taiwan, we have school screening for scoliosis. As
scoliosis has been detected, doctors will refer the patient to us (P&O) or to PT for brace or exercises..."

Isico Youtube channel
Over the years our Youtube channel has grown at great speed: the aim is to give voice to the different needs
of our patients but also of those who follow us as a specialist or past students of our Master or SEAS courses. You will find there the episodes of our live
broadcast Isico on Air or Isico Pills, the short videos on specific topics dedicated to specialists, given by our
doctors and therapists, and the dozens of videos that our young patients have produced for our national brace-competition Concorsetto,
a pun which combines the words "Concorso" = competition and "Corsetto" = brace...
Subscribe to our channel and you will not miss any updates! We remind you that the videos are available with English subtitles. Follow this link and discover the Isico Youtube channel

When is surgery inevitable?
Surgery must be the patient's choice, taken together with the doctor and the patient's family. Given its risks and possible
complications, surgery is not a decision that can be imposed on a patient. What doctors must do is make sure patients and their families are given all the correct
information about their condition (based on scientific evidence and not just on their personal opinions) and then the right tools, so as to ensure that they are
treated as effectively as possible.
It is important to remember that surgery is a definitive choice, and once it is undertaken, there is no going back.

Brace wearing: tenacity is rewarded
with improvements
It is not just a question of how many hours the brace is worn but also of patient compliance with the
prescription.
Take, for example, Marco and Ginevra. Both have idiopathic scoliosis, are followed by Isico specialists, and wear a Sforzesco brace for 20 and 23 hours a day,
respectively. Marco complies with the prescription for wearing the brace, but he is inconsistent with the prescribed hours: sometimes he wears it for the 20 hours
prescribed, others for 10, and others for 22. Ginevra instead regularly respects the prescription of 23 hours daily; this allows her to attain better results and to
avoid worsening.
This is demonstrated by our study,
Consistent and regular daily wearing improves bracing results: a case-control study, published in the journal Scoliosis and Spinal
Disorders...

A judo champion in brace
Giulia is a judo champion, having come top in her category in the Italian Championships. At just 13 years of age, this young girl,

youngsters love to hate, i.e., her back brace! At the start, she was assailed by doubts and
fears...

Skiing, playing a musical instrument, dancing or even jumping in the air - is it possible when wearing a brace? Yes,
it is; the hundreds of patients who participated during the past 10 years in our Concorsetto, the national ISICO competition
dedicated to brace wearers, proved it.
The videos and images of these kids are the best encouragement for those who are preparing to follow a demanding therapy such as that for scoliosis, and who are
living the fear of not being able to practice a sport or play an instrument. So here's the idea for a monthly appointment on our
Youtube channel: follow us and find out what you can do when wearing a brace!
