Every year, when the fierce winter weather arrives, Benedikt, a simple man and the main character of the Icelandic Christmas Carol titled
"The Good Shepherd", has his mission for 27 years now to salvage the forgotten sheep of other people stranded in the Icelandic highlands,
accompanied by his dog and his ram.
Because "what was his life, the life of men on earth, if not an imperfect service which is nevertheless supported by expectation,
by hope?". In a year in which we had to live once again with bright and dark moments, doubts and
expectations, in which the effort of one was that of many, we want to wish you the coming year 2022 full of hope and life with this tale.

The Risser sign, growth and scoliosis: let's clear a few
things up
When patients come for medical consultations or physiotherapy sessions, numerous measurements get taken and recorded, often
without less expert eyes even noticing.
Other measurements, on the other hand, are
quickly seized upon, both by parents and youngsters. Take height for example.
The sliding piece barely has time to touch the patient's head before the patient, hopeful, blurts out: "Have I grown? Can I leave off my brace
now?"...

Anna Kusturova shares her
experience
In each number of our newsletter, we present the experiences on how scoliosis is treated worldwide through an
interview with one of our annual Online Master course participants. They are fellow doctors, physiotherapists, and orthopaedic technicians coming from all over the
world.
The interview this month, is with Anna Kusturova, orthopedist-traumatologist, from Chisinau, Moldova. "Spine diseases are very common in my country. Many patients don't pay attention to
existing problems and usually come to the doctor when complications appear..."

Breaking news: SEAS fala portugus
In 2022 SEAS also speaks Portuguese, meaning that from January, in collaboration with Clinica Linear Saudade e
Movimento, the SEAS Level 1 and Level 2 courses will be held in different locations in Brazil. A fantastic opportunity for Brazilian
professionals to learn or to further improve the evidence-based approach to scoliosis treatment with exercises. The local organizer in Brazil will be Isis
Navarro, physiotherapist certified SEAS for both levels during the courses given in Rio de Janeiro by Michele Romano, director of
physiotherapy in ISICO. For these new training moments Michele Romano will be connected live online to deal with the theoretical part of the course,
starting from introducing the basic principles of the SEAS method, assisted on site by the Brazilian colleague and together they will perform the practical
sessions.
There are seven appointments already set from January to October.
For more information on the local organizer and the SEAS approach please visit the Clinica Linear website or directly on the English site of
ISICO https://en.isico.it/seas-in-the-world/

Welcome guests at Isico
In mid-December we were happy to host two physiotherapists from Turkey, Meltem Ko from Mugla and Yasemin
Akkubak from Konya, at our Milan office. Both graduated from Gazi University, they came to visit us for a few days to get to know more closely our daily

Can a back bend again once the treatment
is finished?
In our experience, documented in data we have published, it is certainly not true to say that spines treated
for scoliosis, once the treatment is over, almost always go back to being as bent as they were before, if not more so. If everything has been done
correctly, the result will generally be stable, at least in the medium term.
Any deterioration after the end of therapy can depend on various factors...
