Andrea's story

Hi, I'm Andrea. It's now been nearly two years, and I finally feel ready, and brave enough, to speak out.
Over time, I have come to realise that people are often judged for the way they look and not for who they really are. So, I may not have a six-pack with super-toned abs, and I haven't got a straight back like other teenagers, but to be honest, none of that worries me anymore.

When is surgery inevitable?

Surgery must be the patient's choice, taken together with the doctor and the patient's family.
Given its risks and possible complications, surgery is not a decision that can be imposed on a patient.
What doctors must do, is make sure patients and their families are given all the correct information about their condition (based on scientific evidence and not just on their personal opinions) and then the right tools, so as to ensure that they are treated as effectively as possible.
It is important to remember that surgery is a definitive choice, and once it is undertaken, there is no going back.
